The Oregon Area Progressives and South Central Wisconsin Move to Amend are holding a press conference in the Senate Parlor of the Wisconsin State Capitol at 10:00 a.m. on Election Day, April 2, to bring attention to the Citizens United ruling and publicize the All About Citizens United forum we are co-sponsoring on April 13 at BTCI. We would love your presence and voice at the press conference.

Getting the Money Out of Politics
We need help to collect petition signatures in Monroe and Belleville to get a resolution on the ballot that says Corporations are not people and Money is not free speech.
A few volunteers working in shifts, should be able to collect all the signatures necessary at the polls on April 2nd. You do not need to live in the municipality to collect signatures there.

If you’ve lived in Wisconsin “from little on” or even if you’ve been here for only a short time, you’re probably aware that the words and ways of Wisconsinites can be unique. If, for example, you go to church suppers and Friday-night fish fries, play sheepshead, borrow your friend money to buy bakery, drink from a bubbler instead of from a drinking fountain, or have ever budged in line, you know you’re from Wisconsin. Luanne Von Schneidemesser and Julie Plier will discuss how the various ethnic and cultural groups which settled Wisconsin have influenced and enriched the language of Wisconsin, exemplifying with words and phrases used in Wisconsin English. They will show how language continues to develop and change with examples of more recent terms taken into our language.
Luanne von Schneidemesser is Senior Editor/Distinguished Scientist at the UW-Madison for the Dictionary of American Regional English, where she has been on staff since 1978. Julie Plier received a BA in French from Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin. She spent seven years working at Scott Foresman editing the Thorndike Barnhart series of student dictionaries.

Woodchucks Meeting
April 9 at 3 pm
Formed in 2008, the Woodchucks have become a go-to group for civic, educational, and home repair needs involving woodworking. The group initially provided a social outlet for middle-aged and older men in the community which has otherwise been unmatched in participation and enthusiasm. More recently, women too have joined the Woodchucks and become active in the shop. The group meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 3:00 PM at Creekside Place, Inc. 102 Maple St. Evansville WI.
The Woodchucks’ dedication to several projects in the community has provided positive exposure for their efforts. The most recent project was the construction of 15 squirrel houses for the Dane County Humane Society's wildlife rehabilitation program. Through its membership and the group’s service work, the Woodchucks have made positive contributions to hundreds of local residents and dozens of local businesses and organizations.
Come to the Woodchuck meeting at 3 pm on April 9 to learn, socialize, and find out more about this hobby group.

Years ago kids could enjoy their youth and then on graduation they could just go down to Janesville and apply to work at the booming GM plant---and presto they could enjoy a fun life of cars, snowmobiles, houses...and all the good things...no college education needed, and no other education needed either..it was mostly train on the job...what could be better.
What faces Rock County youth now? What job prospects?
With the same attitude as in paragraph one, when the youngster goes afar to apply for a job, with no skills and no education....that person is woefully unprepared to compete.
Things have changed...Education matters now...skills matter now..and the competition for students has come in the public school market...not private school market...as public schools compete in Open Enrollment and the schools with the most resources and best plan win.

"You are Never Too Old to Begin"--Memories of Fr. Erbe
Eight years ago, Fr. Erbe was still the pastor of St. Paul's Church. It was a "donut Sunday" which meant that after Mass everyone gathered in the lower level to have coffee and donuts and chat.My mother-in-law, Alyce Hector, was visiting and we were celebrating her 72nd birthday. When Fr. Erbe came over to our table. I introduced him to Alyce and then asked her to "tell him the news.
" "Well," Alyce said, " I just bought my first computer, and I am having all sorts of fun with it."
Turning to Fr. Erbe, I said, "Do you know what that means for you?"
"No," he replied, "What?"
"Well," I said, "You are next."
Fr. Erbe was 70 at that time, and did admit that he had been thinking of getting a computer.
Two weeks later I got the call.
" Come quick." "I just got the computer and need help pronto," Fr. Erbe said.
When I got to the rectory, I went to the upper study, where it looked like Christmas Eve, with boxes all over, with wrapping paper and manuals everywhere. I had been in the computer business, owing a used computer store, and I recognized that Fr. Erbe had bought "The Works". He had even bought the typing voice recognition program. He had been a salesman's dream.
I cleared a path thru the paper and sat down at the computer desk, and said," I think we're a little late for reading manuals, so lets just plunge in."
I installed the browser and opened up Yahoo. Then, as Fr. Erbe sat next to me, I tried to think of a way to explain it all simply.
"Well, all of good and evil is here on the browser line. Just type in what you want, and presto it appears. Like magic. Where should we begin?"
"The Tablet," he replied. I typed it in and hit search. It is a British religious weekly paper covering events of the Catholic Church all over the world.
After it popped up and he read a little, he was very, very excited. "Wow," he said, "This is going to save me a lot of money on subscriptions." Then he proceeded to show me a list of 20 other magazines or books that he had an interest in. I was stunned. Fr. Erbe had the range of interests and reading habits of a 30yr old. Over the next two years, at Mass he would just say "See me" at communion and I knew that some technical consult was required. I was always amazed at the people around the world that he had met online and the books that he explored.
"You are never too old to begin, " he would say.
Few folks know that after Fr. Erbe left Evansville, he began seeing patients at St. Mary's Hospital in his power wheelchair. Speeding in the halls and bringing his message of cheer to patients and families. The spirit of Fr. Erbe lives on in Evansville.

Memories: The Shamrock Shuffle 2013
Last Sunday...our family ran the Shamrock Shuffle, or more precisely, Sue and Amy ran....Molly and I cheered from the sidelines...there was the usual pre-race drama--no parking spots available...cash only for the ramps..a rush to get registered...a record number of racers...all in all it was a wonderful rush...
But after the race...after all the anxiety of whether one could finish...there was the rush of the finish on a sunny day in Madison...and the line at the Sunprint Cafe, right across from the Brat and Brau...but with a vegetarian menu....and as I sat there and ordered a "Tofu Scramble" and wondered...I heard the guys at the next table talk...just chit chat..one guy, probably a college senior..talked about the crisis in Cyprus, and then mentioned that he had just been to his old high school yesterday...and that "They Were All Gone"....his companion said "HuH?"...."All my old teachers were gone...I guess it was the Walker thing...it was really strange...now there is nothing to go back for"

OpEd; "Divide and Conquer" is not Leadership
The entire state of Wisconsin and the local Evansville School District are faced with a crisis of "Governance": that term means far more than "divide and conquer". It also means far more than voting for ones personal political interest....We have come to a time when all politicans are bought and paid for...where citizens, and even the most macho business types are "fearful" of sharing their opinions..and yes even their "feelings" about issues....it might be bad for business...let's just talk about the weather or sports...or maybe beer...
Leadership requires the ability to look squarely at the facts and act in the best interests of a community...that is what is required of a candidate for the Evansville School Board....and also it is required that one show up for meetings....

This is a classic line from "Top Gun", yes..staring Tom Cruise...and in the classic scene, Tom Crusie visits with his flight instructor who had been on the mission where Tom's dad had died, talks about the nature of being a fighter pilot....
In our environment today...technology is the the name of the game...It has been over 10 years since the "Technology Classroom" of Mr. Miller made a difference in Evansville Schools...and the kids in that classroom have gone on to careers using what they learned....
What is the bottom line?
2015 is way too late for Evansville Schools to address the technology gap that they face...this battle is NOW....the possiblity of further enrollment exodus is very real, and could be devastating...Make a note of it.

Jacobson made a motion, seconded by Manring, to recommend that the Evansville Fire Protection District engage in planning about the best way to provide quality, efficient, economical fire protection for the region. Although the city is very concerned about fairness and proportional representation on the Fire District board, this would be a much broader discussion including succession planning, staff coverage, towns serves by multiple fire districts, and/or consolidation

The "Escape to Kissimmee:" deal----nice in a time of austerity
G. Water & Light Committee Report. Brooks made a motion, seconded by Hayes, to approve travel by the Water & Light Superintendent to attend American Public Power Association (APPA) conference in Kissimmee, Florida, at a cost of up to $2,750. Brooks explained the city’s policy requires out-of-state travel exceeding $500 requires Common Council approval. The conference is educational as well as to receive Reliable Public Power Provider recognition. Motion approved 7-0 on a roll call vote.

Local Educators: Worst Education Budget in 30 Years
“This is the worst budget in over 30 years,” the Chippewa Valley Superintendent told me. “We’ve had worse spending cuts, but not a wholesale change in policy.”
Educators worry a dramatic increase in public money for private schools will threaten already cash-strapped local schools. The proposed state budget makes statewide a “voucher program” in which students from “failing” public school districts attend private schools with public money.
Private schools do not follow the same accountability measures as public schools. They do not report test scores, follow state curricular standards, nor do they receive the recently required public school report cards.
The Governor proposed a $78 million expansion of vouchers to school districts with at least 4,000 students and at least two schools that are near failing or failing on the school report card.
Critics fear the increased voucher program will drain money away from public schools’ resources and cause an increase in local property taxes.
Prior to the last budget, the voucher program, sometimes known as “school choice”, was limited to Milwaukee. Vouchers were said to encourage competition between private and public schools to improve schools serving poor inner city students.
Yet a five-year study audited by the Legislative Audit Bureau found virtually no differences in student performance between private and public Milwaukee schools.
Nevertheless, the last budget expanded the voucher program to Racine.
Marc Duff, Budget Director of the Racine Unified School District, recently told The Capital Times Racine lost $1.6 million because of students lost to the voucher program. State aid lost resulted in a nearly 3 ½ percent increase in property taxes.
I recently attended a legislative forum in Eau Claire sponsored by the Altoona School District. Educators from the Chippewa Valley pleaded with legislators to oppose the expansion of vouchers.
School leaders said it’s wrong to use the report cards to make high stake decisions about funding schools.
One Superintendent said there were only two days between the release of the first report card and the testing used to complete the second report card.
“How can we possibly understand what the report card means and make any meaningful changes to influence the next report card in two days?” she asked.
Another said, “Please ask questions about the accuracy of the report card.”
So I did. I contacted the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Officials said using the report card for funding decisions has three problems. First, the report card measures student performance, not school performance. If a report card is used to show school performance it should account for differences in poverty; there is a strong relationship between poverty and achievement. This report card does not.
Second, not enough data was included to make the report card accurate. DPI uses a rolling average of three years of data; this report card only measured one year.
Finally, I learned the report card is still evolving. A new assessment tool will replace the current, flawed WKCE test in the 2014-15 school year. In addition, the ACT test will be given every year. College readiness and other uniform measures will be added to the report card.
What was not discussed in the legislative forum was how close we are to seeing the voucher program in western Wisconsin. The Governor’s budget expands the voucher program to medium size districts that have two or more failing or near failing schools. Eau Claire, La Crosse and Chippewa Falls all have one failing school and one fairly close (or very close) to failing.
What would expanding vouchers in western Wisconsin mean to our local schools?
The Legislative Fiscal Bureau recently completed an analysis that provides estimates to answer this question. From calculations based on their analysis I learned that if no new students went from public schools to private schools, and half of the current private school students sought vouchers, the program would cost the Eau Claire school district nearly $2 million – in addition to the existing serious deficit.
This is why local officials spent an early Monday morning meeting with Legislators. They knew the change in policy was a serious threat to continuation of a strong public school system.

Gov. Walker just can not leave any thing alone and let things settle down. But he made it clear from the start he was very much in favor of school vouchers.
The idea behind school vouchers is good, but are they needed? We already have Open Enrollment. It was suggested that these vouchers are life-savers for those who live in an area like Milwaukee where the public schools are not good, so open enrollment does not really work there because none of the schools are that good. So transferring from one bad public school to another makes no sense.
Some might not have the resources to transport their child to a school outside of Milwaukee , so they are stuck with the Milwaukee schools. This voucher system allows them to go to private schools in Milwaukee, without much travel.
I have heard several people mention they do not want ” their ” tax money going to fund private schools, through these vouchers. I will remind people those who use these vouchers also pay taxes and they have the right for their child to get a decent education.
Some people feel it’s just Walker’s way down the long, slow path to privatizing public schools. That in 10 years there will be few public schools left in Wisconsin.
Quite honestly with the way some public schools are run and the results they DO NOT produce maybe that is best.
HOW ever private schools if they are going to receive TAX MONEY need to be held to the same standards of Public Schools. They must also show results and from what I have read so far they are not. So until private schools are showing results we need to hold off on expanding the voucher program.

Just got the text today from Normal, Mn....it seems that there has been a school bonanza there this year...in enrollment...and it all started out from just one idea from an early morning coffee "blue sky" session at Betty Lou's coffee shop...where all the bass fisherman meet each morning to discuss what the bass might be looking for...as well as other topics. Billy Bob had just thrown out the idea that all over this nation there were lots of girls that wanted the opportunity to play ice hockey, and in light of the falling enrollment that was threatening the very existence of Normal, Mn School District, and also the problem looming that they did not have the money to even think of upgrading.... anything... in the school, well...death and dying of the district did seem to loom...Ice Hockey was the answer...and the guys at Betty Lou's to a man loved the idea. They formed a group that started to build the boards for a giant outdoor ice rink....and they announced to the entire nation that enrollment was now being accepted for girls that might want to join the ice hockey program...all students that wanted to play were guaranteed a spot on the team...and well...the rest is history... Enrollment skyrocketed...Money from the state skyrocketed...and the results for the whole community were astounding...homes were in high demand, money from the state for enrolled students went to pay for the very latest in mobile wireless computers....visitors from all over this great nation came to view the school in Normal, Mn as a role model for academic success. And that's the way it was...stay tuned as I follow this story.

Memories of The Korean War
Memories of Korea;;and the End of the Korean War I remember the end of the Korean War...vaguely...I was five, and I remember the call..my grandmother took it and then told my mom it was for her and was long distance...I was in the dining room eating some toast, cooked my favorite way in the old fashioned toaster, the ones with the two sides that came down...anyway...all of a sudden my mom started crying, and then my grandma started crying...I was a little startled, but they reassured me that it was ok..."your dad is coming home they said." The next few years from 1950 to...well how long was it...it was till 1960 when John Kennedy got the economy "moving again" and we got in the Vietnam war etc....for those ten years there was a type of austerity...and all suburbs were built up around, all the little box style homes with the new kitchens with dishwashers....the men came home from the war and it was frustrating during the retooling to get everybody working again. In today, 2013, I expect the end of the wars will be frustrating as well...and getting the economy moving again without war will be frustrating...and it will provide a challenge to prove that American capitalism can work without war..stay tuned. FALLONE MEETINGS AROUND STATE
The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO has endorsed Ed Fallone for Wisconsin Supreme Court and Tony Evers for State Superintendent.
Tony Evers has stood up for Wisconsin's kids and working families at every turn, fighting back against devastating cuts in funding to our education system. Evers understands the vital role public schools play in providing a pathway into the middle class for Wisconsin children and is the best candidate for Superintendent.
Ed Fallone is a distinguished law professor at Marquette University Law School. He has been a practicing lawyer for almost 25 years in both federal and state courts, and is a strong advocate for at-risk youth and the working poor. Most importantly, Fallone will be an independent judge who will restore integrity to our courts. We trust Ed Fallone to make decisions based on the law, and not on behalf of corporate interests.
Fallone’s opponent Supreme Court Justice Pat Roggensack is part of the dysfunction on the current court and has made decisions based on politics, not the law, to benefit Scott Walker and corporate special interests. Many of Justice Roggensack’s supporters, like the Koch Brothers, have contributed large sums of money to her campaign.

Eastbound I-94 closed near Menomonie after semi slides into river

MENOMONIE, Wis. - The State Patrol says a semi slid off a snow-covered interstate in western Wisconsin and into a river.
Patrol Sgt. Dave Fish says a dive-and-rescue team has been called to the Red Cedar River near Menomonie Tuesday morning to search for the semi driver. There's no immediate word on the driver's condition. Troopers say the semi is from Michigan, but did not have a specific location. All eastbound lanes of I-94 at Highway 25 because of the accident.
A slow-moving winter storm is expected to drop up to a foot of snow in parts of western Wisconsin through Tuesday.
The storm caused dozens of schools to cancel classes, including the districts of La Crosse, Black River Falls, Tomah and Prairie du Chien (doo SHEEN') The University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Viterbo University in La Crosse also called off classes Tuesday as travel conditions deteriorated.

Becky holds Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) workshops several times a year where she teaches participants how to remove the roadblocks and stresses impeding their success. EFT is taught all over the world; recently, it was even introduced in Newtown, Conn., following the tragic events at Sandy Hook. Becky has been teaching EFT since 2000 and was trained under EFT founder Gary Craig. She has also published several children’s books and interactive video stories that teach EFT to younger audiences. Becky will be giving an EFT workshop to the Evansville Area Inventors & Entrepreneurs Club at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Creekside Place, located at 102 Maple St., Evansville. This meeting is free and open to the public.
After the presentation, everyone will have a chance to socialize and introduce themselves to the group. Caffeine-infused refreshments will also be on hand, courtesy of Kathi Kemp, Omar Lopez and Doug Swenson of Café Social, a purveyor of fine Colombian coffees that come directly from local family-owned farms in the Quindio province. Café Social coffees are picked by hand, not machine, to ensure that each bean is ripe. This ripeness adds a richer flavor to the final product.
